NEWS: Senator Schiff Announces Committee Assignments

Will Allow Schiff to Work on Critical Environmental, Justice, Economic, Agriculture, and Oversight Needs for All Californians

Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) announced his committee assignments for the 119th Congress. Schiff will serve on the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary; U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works; and the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve on four committees of keen interest to all Californians. These assignments will allow me to work directly on the high cost of housing and other inflation issues, to support our critical agriculture industry, to address crime and public safety concerns, to support our small businesses, to attack fentanyl, to reform our broken immigration system, to preserve and protect our environment, to deliver vital water and transportation infrastructure, to protect our democracy, rights and our freedoms, and so much more. I’m committed to working across the aisle to deliver for Californians in the U.S. Senate and eager to get started,” said Senator Schiff.

Background:

Schiff is following Senator Barbara Boxer who was a long-time member and Chair of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. Schiff previously served as a member of the Judiciary Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives and prior to that, Schiff chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee in the California State Senate. Senators Feinstein, Harris, and Butler previously served on the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary.

The U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary is responsible for conducting oversight of the Department of Justice, FBI, and Department of Homeland Security. It plays a critical role in the judicial nominations process, vetting and considering nominees to the federal bench. The committee is also responsible for considering legislation that falls within its jurisdiction, which includes issues related to civil liberties, immigration, criminal justice reform, patents, intellectual property, and more.

The U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works is responsible for legislation related to air quality, environmental policy, water pollution, solid waste and recycling, and fisheries and wildlife. The U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry is responsible for food security programs, forestry, inspection of livestock, meat, and agricultural products, rural development, farm security, agricultural production, and more.

The U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship conducts oversight of the Small Business Administration, its disaster loan program, and small business lending and capital access programs.
