Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senators Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Andy Kim (D-N.J), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), and Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) issued the following statement on Senate Republicans’ upcoming reconciliation budget bill:
“This week, Senate Republicans are charging ahead with their plans to pass Donald Trump’s massive tax cuts for billionaires. If they are successful, Republicans will add a whopping $37 trillion to the national debt of the United States over the next thirty years. And it is this sticker shock that has led Republicans to try to use a phony accounting gimmick to falsely claim their plan will cost American taxpayers nothing.
“We won’t be fooled. After decades of claiming the moral high ground on fiscal responsibility, Republicans are cooking the books to hide the true cost of their plan, which can only be achieved on the backs of working families. It is clear Republicans cannot pass Donald Trump’s tax cuts for billionaires unless they gut Medicaid and Social Security and put our country tens of trillions of dollars further in debt to boot.
“As Republicans work to move their budget bill on the Senate floor this week, we are committed to not only opposing this reckless bill but also ensuring that the American people know the truth about enacting Trump’s billionaire tax cuts.”
