Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) delivered remarks at the Armenian Assembly of America’s Genocide Commemoration event. Schiff honored the innocent men, women, and children lost during the Armenian Genocide, reflected on the resilience of the community, and condemned Azerbaijan’s ongoing aggression against the Armenian people.
“Despite the horrors the Armenian people have faced, and continue to face, their faith has not been broken, their determination has not abated, and they have not wavered. The Armenian people have overcome the harshest of trials, and yet, they remain strong and unbowed around the world. There is some hope of an agreement between two countries on a peace deal. But this must bring actual peace, and not merely pave the way for Azerbaijan to gain an upper hand and contemplate a new genocide,” said Senator Schiff during his remarks.
California is home to nearly 250,000 Armenians — more than half of the Armenian diaspora in the United States — and Schiff has been a strong champion for the Armenian community, leading Congress to formally recognize the Armenian Genocide. In 2019, the U.S. House of Representatives passed his resolution officially recognizing the Armenian Genocide by an overwhelming and bipartisan margin.
Following Azerbaijan’s ethnic cleansing of Artsakh in 2023, Azerbaijan continues to hold Armenian prisoners of war. Earlier this week, Schiff submitted a provision to be included in this year’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to bring them home.
