STATEMENT: Sen. Schiff Blasts Trump for Abandoning Ukraine, Cozying Up to Kremlin

Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) released the following statement on President Donald Trump’s reckless abandonment of Ukraine and appeasement of the Kremlin:

“Three years ago, we sounded the alarm as Russia amassed its forces on Ukraine’s border. And as missiles and artillery rained down on Kyiv. As troops marched on Mariupol and Donetsk indiscriminately slaughtering families and destroying communities.

“Strong and unified support from the U.S. and our NATO allies helped Ukraine defend itself and kept Russia’s war machine from over-running its democratic neighbor.

“In withholding needed and promised military support to Ukraine, President Trump has not just abandoned our ally, but he has also emboldened Vladimir Putin, weakened the United States, and placed all our allies in Europe at risk. Siding with Russia will not advance negotiations to end the war and achieve a lasting and just peace. Instead, President Trump has placed Russia first at the expense of our own security and the lives of countless Ukrainians – soldiers and civilians alike – who will suffer the brunt of Putin’s aggression.

“Congress must allow Ukraine to negotiate with Russia from a position of strength, not when it has been knee-capped by the United States. Congress must move swiftly, and on a bipartisan basis, to press the White House to resume support to Ukraine so it can continue to defend itself and remain a bulwark against Russian aggression.

“Nothing less than America’s security and global leadership is at stake.”
